Tiger Woods Driver: in the Wayne D. Lines

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

It’s not often that we get a TV view of any shot with a stable camera and a perfect camera angle, but here on the second hole at Augusta we get just that, and I take advantage of the opportunity to put Tiger inside the Wayne D. lines to see what his pivot is up to. Television does not utilize shutter speed in their cameras (other than the special slow-motion ones) so we can’t provide much detail about the shaft and clubface, although the blur of the club gives us some idea of where the shaft is pointing during the swing. You will see that Tiger’s shaft progression has moderated to a more average 7 and 4 (shaft from address to P3 then P3 to P4), whereas Tiger from the early 2000’s would be more like 11 and 1. Now that he is healthy he is much more “in the box” with his hips and pelvis, adding depth by increasing his right hip flexion and adding anterior pelvic tilt. The biggest change that I believe has gotten Tiger back to be the best is his hand path in transition, which has gone from straight down or even behind him to heading much more outward toward the ball. Getting his right arm in front of him early in the downswing and adding space for it by continually deepening throughout the swing has freed him up to use his hands, and we all know Tiger has probably the best hands in the history of the game. Watching Tiger stay fully in the box past impact, his feet slide diagonally left of target as he drives up and left off the ground, all the while staying nicely out over the ball, tells us that Tiger’s body is now able to do what he wants it to. Hopefully it will hold up and we will continue to be amazed at his greatness.
