I was always the most nervous in tournament play on the first tee, especially if I had gotten myself into contention, which of course ratchets up the pressure. Every player wants to get off to a good start, but when your heart rate is up, and your stomach is not exactly settled the pre-shot routine becomes even more paramount. This should be something that is practiced constantly, and the more you do it the same way over and over the less you have to think about it, which is just what you want when you feel hyped up. Here we are lucky the cameras stayed on each player as they are introduced and follows them as they take practice swings and step up to hit the ball. A player will eventually work out what routine works best for them, but all good players have one and it is going to be tested on that first shot.
