The P.A.T. Project: Student Lesson: CJ D’Arco Part 3

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

The lesson you will view here was only 2 days before CJ attempted the 36 hole PAT (player ability test), and I believe that given the progress I saw in these 2 hours if he had had a few more days to familiarize himself with the changes and boil down the swing thoughts to a usable few he would have made it. As it was, CJ shot 80-76 (no birdies, no doubles) and missed by just 2 shots.

If you go back and watch the first two PAT Project videos you will see clearly that CJ has a serious swing issue that has proven to be quite difficult to change. He is gaining an understanding of what produces ball compression at impact and is showing signs of creating more drag through the ball past impact, but his approach is still way too wide to create the forward lean necessary to drive the ball and control the distance and trajectory with his irons. His idiosyncratic move is a combination lay-off and casting action with the hands and wrists in transition, and that is what we work on here. One of the main differences in this particular lesson is that CJ was with me for 2 hours instead of his usual one, and thus we had time to work through more elements of his transition in order to attack it more effectively. I have no doubt that if I see him consistently prior to his next attempt that he will have no trouble passing the test.
