Lesson of the Week: Joseph Barr Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Joseph has just completed 4 years on the golf team at the University of Kentucky, and is now contemplating playing in some professional events. I have been working with him for about 2 years, although I haven’t seen him more than 3 or 4 times. Even so, he has made great strides with his swing, which was quite idiosyncratic to begin with, and still is to an extent, especially with the driver. Joseph has a unique way of finding a shaft plane approach, but when I saw the amount of head drop and spine tilt in the impact area I…

The P.A.T. Project: Student Lesson: CJ D’Arco Part 4

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

As you know if you have watched the previous videos of CJ’s swing, we are attempting to get through the Player Ability Test for the PGA of America, which is a must if you are going to continue on in your quest to become a PGA Member. Most of the requirements to be a PGA Professional are book learning (you have to attend 3 different weeks of “business school” and pass tests on the information presented, as well as completing extensive course work in workbook form), but one requirement that presents a major hurdle for any aspiring pro who is…

Student Lesson: Joseph Barr

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Joseph is a solid Division 1 player, having played in the starting 5 in every tournament for the University of Kentucky and ranking 37th in scoring average in the conference. Joseph has designs on pursuing golf after college, and between he and his father, Jack, have decided that in order to have a realistic chance at success he would have to improve, which his record, while not shabby by any means, definitely indicates. The problem is that these days (just look at Q-School scoring) shooting 73 gets you lapped (both Lenny Mattiace and Camilio Villegas shot 73 in the 5th…

Online Students: Brandon Nagler Part 3

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Brandon has made some significant changes in his swing so far, and now is in position to make a major breakthrough in his technique. There wasn’t much he could about getting his right arm to move the right way and his hands more forward at impact until he got rid of some of his movement off the ball into a tilted back position as he approached the top of his swing. Now that he has stayed relatively more centered over the ball he should be able to use the sidearm throwing analogy and begin to lean the shaft more forward…

Online Students: Matthew Kontoginais

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Here’s a very sound swing by a powerful guy that could be jacked up to produce freakish distance and dialed down for control by freeing it up in the backswing with wider turn produced by greater overall trunk movement, initiated by a wider move with the upper body and an almost immediate deepening of the right hip. In order to feel this wider takeaway (more “carry” with both arms) I would first have him soften his arms at address to look more like “home plate” (elbows bent) than like the proverbial “triangle”. By concentrating on rotating his spine and including…

The P.A.T. Project: Student Lesson: CJ D’Arco Part 1

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

This should really be an interesting series of lessons so I encourage you to watch the progression. CJ needs to pass his Player Ability Test (PAT) in order to continue his quest to become a Class-A PGA Professional. The scoring requirement does not seem that daunting (the needed score is around 156 or so) unless you are not that good and you don’t play in tournaments because of that very fact. Now, you might ask why someone who wasn’t a good golfer would want to be a PGA Professional, and it would be a good question. Actually, a better question…

Online Student: Kerry Ondrovik

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Here is an excellent swing that lacks what I would call “dynamics”, meaning that watching the wrist and hand action I could see that it just wasn’t’ going to produce the kind of speed that the rest of the mechanics would seem to almost guarantee. The hands and wrists are hugely important elements to the production of speed (among other things) and my advice to Kerry here is to free up his hands by cupping the left wrist a bit at the top (a la Webb Simpson) and then creating more of an angle between his left arm and the…

Student Lesson: The Meyers Sisters

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

When I saw these three young ladies on the range at my club I immediately went over to their father and told him that I would love to teach them. He was a bit overwhelmed with trying to help them himself so he thought that was a good idea, and the swings you see on this video are the product of about 2 hours of instruction apiece. I think you will be as amazed as I was to see these swings, especially when you consider that they have never played more than a couple of holes on the golf course.…
