John has made great strides with his swing and it is showing in his scores. The one item that has proven the most stubborn is the dropping back of the hands and right arm in transition. His backswing is now wider and more on plane, but after dealing with a motion pattern where his pivot essentially caused the hands to want to deepen at the top of the swing, they have a mind of their own and have grooved this unwanted movement.

I’ve been working with John for just over a year now and he has made great strides improving his swing and his ball striking. John’s backswing and pivot movement has improved tremendously, and in this lesson I focus on a few details that I think could help his swing retain width as it gets to the top and consequently allow his left arm to respond to his pivot rotation and move his hands more out toward the ball instead of behind him.

This, like most of the swings we see in the online lessons, is nicely athletic and is one that most people would watch and say something like “you have a great swing – why do you have to keep tinkering with it?” Of course, these are people with little knowledge of what it takes to be a consistently good ball striker. They can see that the swing has nice rhythm and nice looking lines, but the details are not apparent when you simply watch at full speed.
