Lesson of the Week: Jeremy Wells

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Jeremy has been a solid player for William and Mary College in Williamsburg, Va., and has one more semester before graduating and turning professional. He showed some real promise last summer by reaching the semi-finals of the Virginia State Amateur (losing to a 60- foot putt on the 18th hole) and finishing 5th in the Virginia State Open. He showed he could go low by shooting 16 under for 4 days at the Eastern Amateur, and has finished well in a number of college events. Jeremy enjoys working on his golf swing, and since being introduced to the website (and…

Student Lesson: Kenny Engel

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

This is an interesting view of how I initially look at a swing, decide what items need the most attention, then go through different shots and drills to try to narrow down what the root causes of the problems might be. It is obvious from the first swings I show here that Kenny has issues with his sequencing, his path and his impact alignments, but it appears to me that the impact is much worse than the rest of the swing leading up to that point would suggest. In other words, I see many players who achieve an approach position…

Online Students: Ryan Groves Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Ryan has been a faithful member of the website for quite some time, and he has done some very nice work on his swing, especially when it is viewed from down the line. He compresses nicely on the backswing, bring the club up smartly on the shaft plane, and gains depth with the hips while moving symmetrically with the legs and knees. His shoulder, arm, and wrist angles are all quite good as he approaches the top of the swing, but unfortunately the top doesn’t’ come soon enough and the swing goes back overly long, causing some sequence problems and…

Student Lesson: Zach Verses Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

I’ve been working with Zach for some time and we thought we were getting some good progression with his swing, but as he got closer to the time he was going to get back to competing he began to regress a bit and return to some of his old habits. Zach is tremendously strong and flexible and produces a lot of power for a smallish frame. His main problem is control, and we have concentrated on getting the shaft not to cross at the top in order to simplify his downswing and improve his approach to impact. He produces a…

Student Lesson: Jared Kenworthy

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Jared has been a member of the web site for a while now and has created a nice series of videos that he posted in the forum documenting all the hard work he’s done on his swing, check them out if you haven’t seen them yet. Jared used the information on this site, a few online lessons, a lot of motivation, some self-analysis and plain old hard work to build himself a very nice swing. In this video Jared actually made the trip out from Kansas for business and decided to drop by Woodmont for an in-person lesson, which was…

Lesson of the Week: John Alper

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Here we have a perfect example of the need for technique to go along with athletic ability when it comes to hitting a golf ball. John excelled at many sports as a kid and still remains in top condition while working as a television producer. He has come to golf late and has played some but has found it to be more difficult than he ever imagined, so much so that he has not been able to enjoy playing due to extremely inconsistent and generally poor ball striking.
