I have been encouraged by my ball striking this year but once again working on gaining more speed and distance through backswing stretch and load had negative effects on my lower back, which is fused and has been operated on 4 times. I had already been incorporating a right forearm takeaway procedure and in this video I go for a “Couples” like backswing, standing quite erect at address with my feet extremely open and not attempting to load my right hip and leg with pressure as the club swings back. It feels somewhat “lifted”, although with the upright stance there is no noticeable lifting. The progression is different than my usual, with the hands moving more away and in front of me from P1 to P3 (up 10 or 11 degrees instead of 6 or 7) and the position at P2 above but parallel to the original shaft plane (click here for a video that explains the “P” positions), but with the shaft staying perfectly on plane all the way to P4. From the transition I am going for a “hard catch” with the club flattening as much as I can get it to while bending, driving 45 left, and clearing as hard as I can to make room for the right arm to pass by impact freely. The right forearm takeaway has my right wrist extending a bit right away, which in turn flattens (adds flexion) to the left wrist and bring the left wrist to the top somewhat flatter than usual for me. From there I am not trying to immediately flatten the left wrist more, but the flattening move in transition tends to do this without thinking as the right wrist adds extension to aid the shallowing of the shaft. I am very happy about my pelvic movement in this swing, as I add anterior pelvic tilt and see my right cheek actually push back behind the box in transition, something I never usually do, and I then finish more in the box than I’ve seen in quite a while. Hopefully this will be a technique that will allow me to continue to play and compete while practicing enough to be decent.
