Swing Analysis: Scott Strohmeyer

Strohmeyer pre-qualified and then 4 spotted for the Sanderson Farms PGA Tour event while having zero status on any tour, and wound up in a tie for 4th, earning over $177,000. That finish qualified him to play in the next tournament in Las Vegas, where unfortunately he missed the cut. Scott played with Justin Thomas on the 2013 Alabama national championship team, and since then has been trying to play his way out onto the Web.Com Tour, this year missing out in the first stage. It really goes to show you just how many good players there are who can’t quite get through that qualifying school. While watching the tournament I was attracted to Scott’s swing not only because of his background story, but because he led the tournament in driving distance and was another one of these huge hitters with no more that what appears to be a ¾ length arm swing. He is a big, athletic guy in the Dustin Johnson mold, and has great pivot movement. What stands out when watching his swing slowed down is the amount of left wrist bending and the lateness of his delivery into impact with every club. While this certainly adds to his speed production it would seem to cause some problems with clubface control as his hands come in quite high with the shaft way more vertical at impact than it was at address. I would like to see him temper his delay a bit and look for a release that was closer to his body and exiting more to the left. But with the shaft slightly steep at P5 his delayed wrists keep flattening the shaft late and it appears to have a tendency to get caught behind him a bit, which at high speed can cause some wide dispersion in shot pattern.
