Swing Analysis: Mackenzie Hughes

After missing 5 straight cuts and 9 out of his first 11 events for the 2020 season (finishing outside the top 50 in the 2 cuts he made), Hughes finished solo 2nd at the Honda Classic on the incredibly difficult Champions Course at PGA National in Florida with a 50 foot birdie putt on 17 and a fortunate par on 18. Hughes played the infamous “Bear Trap” 1 under for the week and shot a pair of 66’s on the weekend (lowest 36-hole total for the entire field by 3 shots) after making the cut on the number. In looking at Hughes’ swing I see a picture perfect backswing as he keeps the club nicely on plane and maintains his left wrist angle all the way to the top, although he doesn’t create as much right hip depth as most tour players. This lack of depth shows up in the forward swing as he moves both knees slightly toward the ball in transition and appears to come out from under himself a bit heading to impact. This is just an observation, not a criticism, but his recent performance mentioned above and the two pull hooks he hit on 17 (where he made the unbelievable putt) and on 18 where he flew the ball into the grandstands 50 yards left of target (the correct side to miss on but a huge miss) might indicate that he could stand to improve his pivot movement.
