Student Lesson: Mark Long

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Mark has a ton of experience with great players as he has been a Tour caddy for over 20 years. He has seen them all and been right next to most of them, but as you can see his swing does not reflect what he knows he would like to do. The big problem areas have been the same for years: his backswing gets vertical and lifted, while his downswing gets majorly steep and exits way out to the right. I had a feeling that the stuff I was working on and teaching in my day to day lessons and on the website would fit in perfectly with what Mark needed to work on, and that has proven to be the case. He is seeing some real progress with not only the look of his swing but with his ball flight and the solidness of the club/ball contact. What really excited Mark was the way the club flattened out in the stop-and-go drill when his hands moved out toward the ball. This encouraged more immediate rotation of the lower body and actually had the hands, arms and club exiting to the left for the first time when hitting a solid shot.

Mark had noticed over the years that there were a bunch of great players who seemingly “came over the top” while hitting straight or even right to left shots. He has apprised himself of the new D-Plane information coming from the Trackman data and understood how that was possible. Applying that to him was another matter, and the “out” move with the hands and left exit to hit the ball straight is completely counter-intuitive. Thus, he was quite beside himself when viewing his swing, as it felt so different that he didn’t know what to expect at all. It is always a cool moment when the video corresponds with the theory and a good shot results.
