So it’s 78-74 / 152, good enough to make the cut so I have a chance to work on it some more tomorrow. First day on the Blue (the US Open course played from 6950 yards) I hit 7 fairways and 10 greens, felt quite jumpy and didn’t really make anything (33 putts). The second day on the Gold Course from about 6850 (another really good track, cut more through the trees) I hit 7 fairways again but only 7 greens and had 28 putts. It was a grind fest as I had nothing going on at all. I couldn’t hit the face of the club and it was a coin flip as to where the ball was going to go. I got up and down on 14, 15, 16 and 17, two of them from 50 yards out. I got lucky on 16 when a snap hook heading out of bounds hit a tree and came back in. I putted beautifully, making almost every one of the ones I should have made, and my pitching was world class. I went out after the round and videoed a driver swing from front and back, and once again, as always happens, when I looked at it my first reaction was “no wonder”. I was swing so far under myself and out to the right that it looked like I was trying to hit a 50 yard hook. It was awful looking, so I made myself take the club straighter back and swing what feels way left through the ball and suddenly I hit the center of the face and produced a decent shot. It’s still too dangerous to practice after such a taxing round so I will take that thought into tomorrow and try to hit it better. I’m in a tie for 38th so there isn’t much at stake but my back feels ok so if I can get my swing to allow my body to function better it will be all for the good. Anyway, it was a huge grind but it’s nice to see my old buddies and to get out there with the heart pumping extra hard.
