Kevin is a former Tour player (exempt status in 2002 and 2010) who has 6 Web.Com victories (or whatever that tour was called at the time he won) to his credit, which gives him status out there every year. He is 48 years old and is thinking about trying for the Champions Tour, but he has been struggling the last couple years and came to me for some help. This is our first lesson and it was only an hour but I think we hit on a very important point in his swing, the fact that he had gotten physically lazy and was simply not using his pivot effectively from start to finish. The initial set up certainly had something to do with the problem, as you will see him kind of on his heels a bit and slumped over in a relaxed but un-athletic posture. From there he was not utilizing his upper trunk at all, and when I started to crank him up it was obvious that he hadn’t felt that kind of width or big muscle movement for some time. We are getting together again in a week or so, and our next order of business will be to get the lower body to be way more aggressive to go along with the added torque generated by the backswing. A good swing requires a significant amount of physical activity, and when players get lazy and their pivot motion gets slack the effort to engage the muscles and joints more fully can feel like a lot of work. Of course, no one wants to feel like the swing is work, but hey, you can’t always get what you want.
