Playing for Money: Jeremy Wells

Jeremy’s swing keeps getting better, and our hope is that better ball striking will lead to some check cashing down on the mini-tours in Florida this winter and moving forward. As you can see (and have seen in our videos before) Jeremy has excellent action and produces a nice line of compression at impact, but his accuracy and consistency have been a little off, and at Q-School 1st stage the erratic ball striking led to him missing by a few despite a fine 67 in the final round.

At this level the changes are going to be fairly subtle to the eye, but with the aid of the video and the line drawing software we can see the swing change and mark its progress. Our focus here was to get the club to approach from a slightly deeper position with the left arm squeezing into the chest in transition, as we noted that his hand path was a bit too far outward for too long, and the hands were approaching from above the shaft plane with the clubhead also slightly out to in. The high to low approach discouraged the free release of the clubface, and the fear of the pull had him blocking the face into impact and hitting some weak right shots. We also noted a tendency to sit down and back away in the takeaway, which led to a laid off position at the top of the swing. We focused on keeping the head out over the ball and starting the swing without the sitting trigger move, and were able to steepen the shoulder turn and to lay the club off less. With the left arm squeezing more in the downswing the hand path became slightly deeper, and since he does such a nice job of laying the club back with the hands kicking out that slight change brought the hands down to the approach area more right on the shaft plane so that the clubhead could head to the ball from the shaft plane and not from above it. We still have work to do on increasing his lateral movement and training the head to stay in the box in the downswing, but we are gaining on that as well. All in all the swing, as I said, keeps getting better, and that’s all you can ask for. Now he just has to take it out and go low.
