Chas came to me through his friend and my long-time student Jason Gandy. Chas played well enough to earn his Web.Com card for 2016, but only made 8 of 21 cuts with 1 top 20. Jason encouraged Chas to send me a few swings to look at and that is what you will see here. Chas obviously has a powerful and fluid swing with excellent rhythm and tempo. At regular speed, you will probably notice right away that Chas crosses the line at the top to a fair degree, then does a great job of kicking the shaft back in transition. The problem I see with the face being that shut on the way back is that it greatly affects the way the right arm and shoulder move to the top and into transition, in effect “jamming” the back of the right shoulder blade and pinning the upper right arm back, which then affects its ability to get back in front of the chest in the downswing so that the hands can be more forward at impact. I would like to see Chas try to open the face with the left hand and forearm while maintaining the height and spacing of his right arm. I think this will allow him to swing the club on plane throughout the backswing and to keep his upper right arm more in front him at the top, which would then put him in better position to get his right arm more in front of him coming down and his hands more up to the ball. Overall I think it would simplify his swing and make it easier for him to eventually control the clubface through impact.
