In case you think I have to look hard for stuff that TV commentators say in order to find material for this type of video think again. I mean, it just jumps right out at you. If you were watching the telecast and saw Peter Kostis claiming that Rory McIlroy starts his swing with his hands and then, even more amazingly, starts his downswing with his hands and arms, I am betting that one of the first things that occurred to you was that “Wayne has to be watching this. I bet there’ll be a video”. Well, you would be right about that. Who in their right mind would ever claim that McIlroy’s arms drive his pivot, and that the evidence is a video of Rory when he was 3 years old? You’d have to be crazy (or ignorant), to claim such a thing, and yet here is the great Peter Kostis doing just that! He’s done some goofy stuff in the past, but this really takes the cake. The video shows clearly that Kostis is simply wrong, and it’s not even a close call. Rory initiates his swing with a trigger movement of the hips and upper body, in other words the pivot, and moves forward with his lower body from the ground well before the backswing is finished, making a hand and arm start down impossible. Not only that, but in a more general sense there is a huge amount of data available from 3D analysis that shows beyond a doubt that what Kostis is talking about never happens with good players. In fact, starting forward with the lower body leading the arms is the main difference between the “haves” and “have-nots” in the game.
