Patrick Cantlay Swing Analysis 2019

It is amazing that at 27 years of age and after having missed 3 full years of action on the PGA Tour with a fracture in his lower back Patrick Cantlay has risen to #6 in the World Golf Rankings. In this video I look at his swing now versus 2011 just before he turned pro, and I encourage everyone to watch a video on YouTube by TPI founder Greg Rose (to see that video just scroll down past my swing analysis video and you’ll find it below) explaining how Cantlay changed his swing to lessen the stress on his spine and still maintain and even increase his ability to create speed. I side by side his swing from 2011 (just before he turned pro) with one from the 2019 Shriner’s where he finished 2nd , losing in a playoff with Kevin Na, and the changes are obvious, starting with his posture and then with his overall takeaway motion where he allows his right hip to deepen much more from P1 to P3. As Rose explains, adding backswing stretch (you can see that his swing is now longer and his hip turn greater) lessens the X-factor torque in transition (where the initiation of the downswing with the reversal of the pelvic movement causes an increase in stretch in the left side) and thus takes pressure off the lower back. Cantlay has made 83% of the cuts in the tourneys he has played in since turning pro, and much like Pat Perez returning from shoulder surgery to play great golf Cantlay has shown his both his toughness and his high level of ability.
