Papa DeFrancesco at 94: Still Swinging

It’s such a bonus to still have my father around and doing well at 94 years young. He recently self-published a book on math theory (way over my head) and is now designing an attachment to make power washers clean more efficiently. He was always a whiz with numbers (he worked for NSA and DIA before anyone even knew what they were) and he can take apart and put back together (fixed) just about anything. He became interested in golf in the late 50’s and joined Lakewood, where I’m now the Director of Instruction, as a charter member in 1959. I remember my first golf experience as hitting whiffle balls in our back yard, which at the time seemed like a long par 3, although after a visit back there years later I found that our yard was no more than 25 yards deep. I was allowed to play on the course at the club when I was 10 (although Dad snuck me out a year early), and I played in the summer with my friends at a 9 hole public course around our area in Northern Virginia as well as playing with Mom and Dad at the club. He would teach me in our back yard in Mclean (we moved when I was 10), and he had Hogan’s Five Lessons on the bookshelf for me to read. His instruction was simple: good grip and set up, left shoulder under the chin, head behind the ball, drive the legs before the arms. I found that I was good at the game when I finished 2nd in my first tournament at the age of 12, and after that I was hooked. Dad was never a great player (I think his lowest handicap was 8 and his lowest round 75), but he could always get it around and he played with my mother almost up until she passed away 3 years ago. As you will see here, he still makes a nice pass at the ball and can knock his driver out there close to 150 yards when he catches it. I think we can all aspire to be as energetic when (if) we get to 94.
