Playing for Money: Jonathan Krick

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

I think after you watch this video you will agree with Jonathan that we made some significant progress during this 2 hour lesson. The changes we made in the backswing produced exceptionally good looking positions from the takeaway to the top, and although we accomplished this with a stop and go drill it still shows that Jonathan can make a great looking backswing and still hit the ball, and that when he takes it to regular speed and films it he will know just what to look for and to concentrate on to get it to look and feel the way he wants.

Swing Analysis: Wedge Play with Jordan Spieth, Patrick Reed and Brooks Koepka

By Wayne | Videos: Swing Analysis

This video should help dispel some faulty ideas about pitching, specifically about using the bounce versus forward leaning the club into impact. If you listen to the TV announcers there seems to be an inclination to suggest that all pitch shots “use the bounce”, but I think you will see here that that is not the case. Before we get to that aspect let’s just be sure to note that all these players make full use of their pivot in order to properly sequence the swing and to get the body to lead the hands and arms into the shot.

Online Students: Byron Miles Part 2

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Byron signed up for a phone conversation but decided to send in a couple more swings to see if he had made progress after viewing the first lesson. I don’t understand why more people don’t do two in a row like that as I think Byron will be able to fully incorporate the changes after getting feedback on his first attempts. Some of these changes feel so exaggerated that it’s hard to do them enough because it feels like there is no way that it could be correct.

Lesson of the Week: John Hughes

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

John is a website member who happened to be traveling through Florida at the same time I was teaching in Boca, so he took advantage and came over for a couple hours. John is a big, athletic guy with a nice looking motion but had been really struggling with his ball striking. As usual it was not immediately apparent in a full speed swing what the issues were, but when we slowed it down and looked more closely it was easy to see a common pattern that is produced when the right arm stays too “pinched” in front of the chest in the backswing.

Wayne D. in the Basement: Playing some Blues and Swing Harmonica

By Wayne | blog

I’ve been asked a few times for this and I had some time alone in the house so I figured I’d play behind a couple of jam tracks. I have had a great time learning to play the instrument and it has made me a bunch of new friends totally oblivious to anything golf, which is a nice break at times. I’ve been playing for about 10 years, and the thing that has helped me most are the lessons I’ve taken from some of the best players in the U.S., including…

Lesson of the Week: Billy Lincoln

By Wayne | Videos: Lesson of the Week

Billy is a website member from California and when he saw that I was going to be in Phoenix he took a quick flight over for a lesson. Billy was a 1 handicap before he broke his back in a car accident in Mexico and now is a frustrated 5 even though he has gotten his strength and mobility back. I always watch my students hit a few full shots while asking them about their background and how they feel about what they are doing at the moment, and sometimes I can spot some obvious things right away that I know will be a big help, even before I film the swing.

Papa DeFrancesco at 94: Still Swinging

By Wayne | blog

It’s such a bonus to still have my father around and doing well at 94 years young. He recently self-published a book on math theory (way over my head) and is now designing an attachment to make power washers clean more efficiently. He was always a whiz with numbers (he worked for NSA and DIA before anyone even knew what they were) and he can take apart and put back together (fixed) just about anything. He became interested in golf in the late 50’s and joined Lakewood, where I’m now the Director of Instruction, as a charter member in 1959.

Online Students: Byron Miles

How cool is it to be giving a lesson to a good player from Australia when I’ve never been close to Australia in my life? Very cool. And this is a very cool swing to look at because it does so many good things. You could pretty much tell that it was Hogan influenced even without Byron’s comments, so when I compare it to Hogan’s swing a couple of major differences emerge, and when he makes the changes I think it will improve his ball striking dramatically and fairly quickly.
