Yoshi is an avid golfer from Japan who came upon the website and decided to send me his swing for analysis. It is certainly an interesting one, as his anxiousness to make sure the beginning of his swing is correct by watching it go back has caused him to develop a rather bizarre takeaway. Yoshi plans on coming to the states to see me in a few weeks and I have no doubt that we will spend as much time as it takes to correct this and to turn it into a normal looking backswing. In most cases people who work themselves into such odd movements do so without being aware of what is happening, but in some cases they can even watch themselves and not realize how bizarre they have made their swing. One thing is for sure: taking the eyes off the ball in a real swing to watch the club go back is a horrible habit that must be broken in order for the student to progress. I have come to the conclusion that tour pros who look up at their hands at the top of their swings as they rehearse after hitting bad shots are the cause of this affliction. Whatever the case, looking away from the ball is completely disruptive and must be stopped. I am confident that Yoshi, whose swing after the horrendous takeaway is actually very good, will improve greatly once he learns to take the club back smoothly with his eyes on the ball.
