My first online lesson was last summer. It took a while before I thought I looked better on video. I struggled with getting my right elbow higher going back until I hit on more left lateral spine bend at the end of the backswing, followed by right lateral spine bend as impact approaches. I’m interested in your thoughts on that. I turn 70 in September, so my goal is to shoot my age before then. Thanks. Bill
Bill has one of the best swings I’ve ever seen for an amateur of his age (he’s 69). It is a powerful and mechanically sound move, and it has improved since his first online lesson 9 months ago, which you will see clearly from the side-by-side views of his driver swing. Here I make a couple of recommendations to keep the progress going, starting with a simple change in posture and balance at address. Bill looks a bit stiff in the lower body and has his weight too much toward his heels for my liking, and I’d like him to adopt a bit more athletic stance with more knee flex and his weight a bit more on the balls of his feet. The big change here will be in how Bill finishes his backswing. I would like to see more right arm extensor action combined with wrist cock to end the backswing to keep the right arm and shoulder from overstretching and leaning him forward in transition. He has succeeded since the last lesson in getting his upper right arm in better position at P.3, (see swing positions video) and from there he can finish the backswing off with left arm and shoulder extension and trunk rotation and not right arm and shoulder pull back if he finishes the back movement with the wrists cocking and the hands pushing away from his head. The side by side with Hogan shows clearly how this will help Bill’s swing.
