This video is a good example of the difficulty in changing a right arm motion pattern. If you watch Tyler’s first video lesson we focused on getting the upper right arm to move inward toward the chest to start the forward swing, which would take the end of the grip and the hands more out toward the ball. Tyler is a strong guy with an excellent move but when his right arm drops behind him in transition it gets stuck to the side of his body and the hands just don’t get forward enough to give the ball a good clean strike. The rest of the pattern is obvious here as well: if the club is steep even a little bit into the downswing good players will flatten it late and the shaft will get caught behind the hands and bring the clubhead to the ball overly in to out. Also, when the right arm drops down or behind the player it cannot unbend in a timely fashion and when it is overly bent approaching impact the hands usually come in high. Tyler’s buddies, David Holmes and Jason Gandy, all come from the same area and were taught, not surprisingly, by the same person. That is not surprising to me as I was another one who taught the hands to try to drop down close to the body to affect a shaft plane approach as early as 4 or 5 years ago. David got the idea immediately, Jason struggled with it but is making great progress, and I would expect Tyler, after seeing that he has not made the necessary changes yet will focus even harder and that the next time we see his swing it will be different.
