Online Students: Tom Smith

Wayne: I really enjoy the website and have really learned a lot from your videos. I am 58 and have recently retired so would like to spend more time refining my swing and lowering my handicap. I have a number of issues early in my swing that have proved challenging to correct. Club under the shaft plane, not using my trunk to initiate the swing which progresses to a down swing where the club comes in high and gets stuck. I am looking for your thoughts on what my priorities should be and how I should go about correcting them. The excessive right movement of the head and going under the shaft plane early in the swing have proved challenging to fix. I look forward to hearing from you.

Tom has a number of things to correct in his swing, but I think that to begin the process he needs to change his grip and setup. His stance is noticeable leaning to the left, and as a result he has way too much upper body movement to the right in the takeaway. His grip is very weak, as we can see by the fact that the clubface is open at left arm parallel and at the top even though his left wrist is pronouncedly bowed. I would like to see Tom be able to finish his backswing by cocking the wrists as he stretches his left side, leaving his right upper arm more in front of him. All this should allow him to move the right arm in front of his ribcage in transition while retaining more angle between the wrists and the shaft. Through impact Tom drives his right knee downward and toward the ball, which in turn drags his left knee down so that it is bending when it should be straightening. Tom needs to rotate the right side of his pelvis more inward and up into the left side so that he can keep his hips deeper and get his pressure over top of the left leg where he can use it to help him clear his hips better.
