I’m a 57 years old 1 handicap. I would like to get more offense in my game by improving overall ball striking consistency, greens hit in regulation and proximity to the hole.
I have been working on many things based on your teaching. The most important: 1) less right hand/arm pull-back at the top of the swing, more wrist cock and extensor action. 2) turning the left wrist down through impact.
Turning the wrist down has had the most profound effect, and I do believe was a major missing piece in my game. It has allowed me to get more sustain at impact, and has supported a more aggressive turn through with my hips (a work in progress).
The results have been more solid and consistent contact, though my ball flight is a little low (in the videos I am hitting a 5 iron). I am not sure if this is because of the hard range balls or something else.
My miss is a consistent push fade, indicating a good path but a slightly open face. It is actually a decent shot to have in the arsenal. However, I have to work very hard to get the wrist turned down adequately to hit a straight ball or a draw.
I do drills hitting balls starting from impact position, and have included a 5th video to demonstrate.
I’ll be out of the country for a couple weeks so I look forward to coming back to your suggestions!
Thanks, Todd
When you watch the video, you will see that Todd is doing most everything right. I really like the way he planes the shaft during the swing. And with a good set up his swing is bound to look just about perfect. The three things I suggest would more than likely not be noticeable without the aid of slow motion video. I bet Todd is told all the time that he has a “great” swing and that he has “great tempo”. This is probably annoying to Todd because if his swing was that good why wouldn’t he hit the ball better? Here I suggest three things: Not lifting at the start of the backswing, changing the nature of your pelvic motion in transition, and “snap” the club into impact instead of gliding through. I think Todd is on the verge of having something really good here.
