Online Students: Ryan Groves

Here is another example of a big (6’5”), strong guy who can really move the club but needs better technique in order to control the ball and play better golf. Ryan’s swing is long and rangy with too much lower body movement in the backswing, and when a player is not a Tour player such action is going to lead to erratic results. The idea was to tighten up the backswing, and you can see here that Ryan has done a great job in this regard. It is still a bit over parallel, but his leg movement is much more stable and the whole thing is way more under control. He has pretty much eliminated his hip slide in the backswing, and in setting up more on top of the ball he has a much better chance to make descending contact. That said, he still needs to work on leaning the club more forward at impact.

One of the things you will notice here is that Matt has actually lessened his lateral hip movement in the forward swing. This is more than likely a result of his focus on lessening the lateral movement in the backswing, but whatever the case he needs to reinstate his nice forward movement to start the downswing. This highlights one of the common problems in working on your swing: when you focus on a specific thing, make sure it does not affect other things that you were already doing well. Everything you work on will cause changes elsewhere in the movement. It is your job to keep an eye on what is going on with the rest of your swing and make sure that you don’t lose stuff that was good.
