Hi Wayne,
“Hope all is well. I just put up video links and payment for part 3.
So there is some movement in directions you have suggested, at least compared to Jan / Part 1 videos. Certainly more work to do though. Ugh… This is hard work :) but I enjoy it. iron swing showing changes registering better than with driver – that long club and desire for speed certainly brings back the old faults – especially in transition and posture is lost.
First question I have is my right foot seems to have some hang back going on now, heel fairly far from vertical even on these full swings. I do have good flexibility – but I don’t like the look of it – would like you to look at that and advise if you think it’s something to step in and work to fix, or just keep working on the same items – which is mainly the tale of two rotations 1) clubface opening in backswing 2) better hip pivot coming down. I think this hang back might be creeping in from taking a lot of bunt swings or short club swings to work on the new motions – maybe I just focus on carrying through to a full finish even on the bunt motions, or maybe I am lacking some leg drive?? focusing too much on spinning hips?
Also wondering about my right arm / hand action in backswing now that I am rotating the club to some degree and if there is any cleanup of undesirable affects I should think about.
So overall though ball striking is showing signs of new potential. I had a 5 round run in April at home club with stroke avg. of 70.8 (par 71, course rating 72.1). I have stats for last 5-6 years and I tried to find a similar run on same course, it was the best, closest was one last Aug maybe 4 rounds at a few over aggregate, but in looking at GIRs that Aug run was ~ 10 avg. and the one last month was just under 14 -so last Aug was a hot run with short game, this recent one more done with ball-striking. My short game is actually fairly rusty – just hitting balls to work on these new motions last four months and playing a bit. Putting fairly well though.
Also just played in first event and successfully qualified for Northern California Mid-Am (25+) in an 18-hole qualifier (shot 77- survived a bad mid-round stretch of holes where I really lost my swing a bit – it’s certainly a bit squishy with the new motions/feels); however – birdied last 3 par 5’s after the rough patch, so again showing signs of getting some things done with ball-striking (reached two of them in two swats, nice layup and wedge swings on the other). 36-hole medal play final will be second week of June in Monterey on some tough courses – something to look forward to!!”
Rick has made nice progress with his swing and in this video I try to keep things moving forward by focusing mostly on continuing to get his backswing working better. He has done a nice job of getting the face less shut going back, but the change has led to some undesirable effects. It is common for players to over-rotate the entire left arm when trying to open the face (instead of just the lower forearms and hands) with the result being the left arm rolling too much across the chest and right elbow staying too low. When the hands get so deep at left arm parallel and the shaft gets a bit flat the right arm almost always gets too far behind the right side and has trouble recovering in the downswing. We see that here with Rick, and I think that if he moves the club back more in front of his body while keeping the right arm higher and wider (which he did when he shut the face more) that he would be in much better shape to get the right upper arm more in front of him on the downswing. In addition, I suggest that Rick keep his pelvis more up and tilted in the backswing instead of sitting down so much. This is probably a function of trying to compress in the backswing, which is a good idea, but in this case he has overdone it somewhat. He can add pressure under the right foot by pressing down and doesn’t need to lower his whole pelvic area to do so.
