Hi Wayne –
I enjoy the website and how you are able to dissect a golf swing with precision. The first four video links are at regular speed (6-iron and driver) and the last four links are in slo-mo (I only included these if they are helpful). My ball striking has improved significantly from my first online lesson a few years ago. The key problems in my swing a few years ago was a ton of lateral head movement off the ball, leading to a poor sequencing of the swing and eventually getting stuck on the downswing. While these are tendencies I continue work on, I think they are less severe than before.
I typically shoot anywhere from 69 to 82. A typical round is about a 75 with a few birdies, a triple bogey and a couple of three-putts.
As I critique my own swing, I think my backswing is okay, but there are problems with my downswing. This is most evident with the driver swing as the impact position from the down-the-line is particularly awkward looking. Specifically, I think my leg work is poor/inefficient, right leg tends to shoot toward the ball instead of on a 45-degree angle left of the target, my head backs up significantly due to a loss of posture, and my hands come in high. I am currently trying to work on rolling my right foot inward (toward the target) on the downswing instead of letting the right heel to come up well before impact. Based on the swings in these videos, I need to keep working on this. When I execute that move correctly, I think this helps me keep my hips in the box (as much as possible) and prevents the right leg from jetting out to the ball so much. I also think my right arm motion could be improved as I don’t like how it straightens completely at impact (I would rather it straighten after impact), but this isn’t anything I have worked on yet (and honestly don’t know if this is something I should work on).
Anyway, these are just my thoughts. I am far more interested in your thoughts and look forward to your recommendations on how I can improve my swing. Thanks for the help.
From Michael’s email you can see that he has a very clear idea of what his problems are, but not a clear idea of how to fix them. From the video you will see that he has an excellent swing, and that his most glaring issue is just what he thought it was, the use of his lower body in the downswing. He has a good head start on this as his backswing does pretty much all the right things, but in the forward swing he leaves his right upper leg stationary and rotates the right hip without any forward drive, which causes it to head toward the ball instead of left of target. I compare him with Rory and the difference there along with the explanation will (I hope) help him retain his hip depth and to clear his left leg much better, which in turn will allow him to get his hands more forward at impact and to sustain his bent right wrist/flat left wrist past impact.
