This was a particularly interesting online lesson to give as Michael has an excellent swing (he’s a 2 handicap) and is knowledgeable enough about the swing in general to know that his hands approach impact quite far above his original shaft plane. While he didn’t mention the type of shots he hits that keep him from being a better ball striker, my guess is that he is generally erratic, mostly because of the difficulty in managing the clubface through impact with a high approach due to the necessarily complex wrist action required to get the clubhead down to the ball while squaring it.
What I picked up right away had to do with Michael’s movement off the ball in the backswing, which led to sequence problems in transition, which then caused his right arm to malfunction and lead to the high hands approach. This fits right in with the sidearm throwing analogy that I have been expounding on in my website videos such as the “Hogan Secret” and the “Right Arm” video. I include a few throwing examples and show the use of an obstacle to give the feel of a shaft plane approach, as well as suggesting a means for Michael to cure his movement off the ball in the backswing.
