Online Students: Mattias Karlsson Part 2

Hey Wayne!

“Nice to hear from you!

Well, since I got the online lesson from you I have been working pretty hard with my swing. It took some time get it right in the back swing. A Little bit higher/more away from the body with the right elbow, but not a flying elbow and crossing the line on the top of the backswing. After some hard work I figured out and now it looks good.

Now I’m working on the downswing. Squeezing the elbows a Little bit in the start of the downswing, get the butt of the club moving in a direction somewhere to the ball and holding the lag more into impact with the elbows pretty close to each other and get the hands going left through impact. I can do it very good in slow-motion so I´m doing a lots of drills between the balls when I’m exaggerating this to reach improvement. I´m very glad that I’m very close to coming back on the shaft plane at impact. A difference at only 2 degrees between start of backswing and impact.
My ballstriking has been pretty much better and the hits are often more clean. Before I had lots of problems with fat ones.”

As you will see in the video Mattias is making great progress, especially with the backswing, and the rest of the swing is much better as well. The issue I focus on here is one he is already working on but still needs to improve. Mattias’ right upper arm is too passive in transition and tends to stay up and too much to his side. I think there is still a bit of pull back with the muscles of the back of the right shoulder, which always impedes the forward movement of the upper arm. I would like to see more width just after the trunk movement pulls on the left arm: Mattias closes the space between the upper right arm and the right side (the right arm pit closes almost immediately) right away in transition and it looks like his right shoulder hunches enough to keep it from making the sidearm throwing motion. The feeling of pushing the right palm into the left thumb as the wrists cock to finish the backswing (the lower body would be already starting its 45 degree push) would be a good thing to concentrate on.
