Wayne,
“It feels pretty good overall. The start of this year my play has been good and I managed to get to +4 which is cool, but largely thanks to good driving. My iron play is sporadic; with some misses that are too large and I definitely still need to improve the knock downs we worked on last year. Regarding technique, I have been having a little trouble grasping lower body movement as when I try to start my hips in a counter clockwise fashion they cut away from the line too early (when viewing from face on), and my hands drop behind me rather than towards the ball. However, there’s no doubt that I am really pleased with how my game is currently trending.”
In this video lesson, you will see that Matthew (who incidentally has an excellent swing) is spot on about his concerns with his lower body movement and how that contributes to his right arm issues in the downswing. I encourage him to load his right hip straighter back with less twisting of the right femur (upper leg) so that he stays up against the ‘’box” line (from face on) longer and thus help maintain the space under his right upper arm. As his right hip cuts toward the center too soon his right side finishes the backswing by pulling slightly behind him with his arm pit closed tight, which in turn leads to the upper arm coming down more behind the right side than we would like. When the upper arm is more to the side than in front of the chest it tends to release more out to the target instead of around on plane, which I consider problematical for clubface control.
