Online Students: Mark Braziller

Hey Wayne, I’m a PGA Teaching Professional in the Met Section and I’m looking for a little guidance.

I’ve had some decent showings in section events but have struggled to take my game to the next level and really perform the way that I ought to. Most of my mentors in the area think that my swing is “great” and that I need to work on the mental and short game. After working with a mental/short game coach for a while now, I can see that in order to get over this hurdle – I need to drive the ball in play!

I know for certain that I extend early and it’s causing a two-way miss. I’m not entirely sure why this is happening and I’m definitely not sure how to fix this. I’ve had some success driving the ball thinking – “stay very still and hit it hard with the arms”. This gets rid of the big push right, but as you can imagine, it gives me some impressive pull hooks.

Some more info in this long-winded message: I’ve always been a very strong short-mid iron player. My hybrids and fairway woods tend to fly too low and erratically (low on the face and toey). Swing speed with a 6 iron is about 85mph, about 105mph with driver.

I’m looking forward to whatever help you can give me. I’m trying to prep for a couple big events after Labor Day and I need some clarity in order to shut my brain off and just play! Thanks so much.

This is a pretty involved lesson so I will leave it up to you to watch and decipher it. Mark does indeed have a good swing, and I can see where teachers who aren’t technique oriented would see it as more than adequate and that Mark’s issues must be mental. As usual, though, upon closer inspection Mark has some issues delivering the clubface to the ball, especially with the driver, caused mostly by his right arm action. I always spend more time on this type of lesson because the interactions are more subtle and it takes more time to study before coming up with hopefully intelligent suggestions. I think you will find it interesting.
