Online Students: Mark Armstrong

Hi Wayne,
I hope I did this correct. I am a friend of Derek Gillespie’s and he told me to send a few videos. I have trouble getting my lower body turning getting off my back foot and on to the left side. I am trying keep my hips and knees from moving towards the golf ball on the downswing. I usually play to a 0-3 handicap. I would like to get more distance and get my lower body moving underneath more. Let me know as I work on what you think I should. thanks!

This is a good example of how important the set-up is in how the golf swing functions, and how posture and balance can determine how the body moves once the swing gets started. Mark has exaggerated knee flex for sure, but most importantly he starts with his weight well back into his heels. As soon as I see a set-up like this I expect the general movement of the pivot to be forward toward the ball, and keeping the hips in the box almost an impossibility. There are a few players on Tour who set up like this (maybe not as heel heavy but very flexed) such as David Lingmerth, and others who move out from under themselves a good bit such as Tyrell Hatton, but most normal players suffer when the lower body drives under them and toward the ball. I will bet that if Mark is able to make the change to his address position by eliminating some knee flex, standing up taller and placing his balance point towards the balls of his feet that good things will start happening immediately. It is difficult to make radical changes in the set-up without visual help, so I encourage Mark to use a mirror and to take video of his swing to see if he is exaggerating enough.
