This is John’s second online lesson (the first 3 months ago) and you will see that progress has definitely been made on the backswing. What needs to happen now is a more difficult task, changing the sequencing of the swing in order to get the right arm to start down earlier from a better position and move into a better approach to impact. About ¾ of the way into the backswing John is in exemplary position, as I note in a side-by-side with Hogan. While Hogan goes back another few inches and “catches” his arms with a driving pivot (45 degrees left), John continues to go backwards while his right arm continues to climb and get away from his body. When the legs do move into the forward swing the effect on his right arm is to move the forearm from a more vertical position to a more horizontal position, what some would call “over the top”, but since John is a good player his shaft does not move out past his hands into an “out to in” approach, but rather it trails back against his hands while his hands move way out away from the body into an extremely high approach. I have always contended that this “high” approach is more complicated than one that approaches more on the original shaft plane, and the idea for John would be to start his downswing sequence with a much earlier movement (45 degrees left) of his lower body, thus “catching” the upper body and making it possible for him to reverse his right arm tendencies. Changing this timing factor in the swing is not easy, but if progress can be made it should lead to immediate improvement in ball striking.
