John and I have been working hard on trying to get his hands to stop dropping behind him in transition. He is progressing nicely but as you can see the pattern, while improved, is still essentially the same. This video is a good example of how I brainstorm these things and try to come up with root causes of the chronic issues and ways to beat the problem. My theory in this particular case is that since John likes to come down from a certain angle and to get there he always drops his hands backwards (which gets the club right on the shaft plane but leaves his right arm behind him), why not just deepen the backswing by taking the left arm more across the chest and letting the right arm flare more with the right elbow getting more even with the side of his back at left arm parallel. This would give him a better chance to feel ok about moving the hands more out toward the ball in transition. Players who are upright and keep the arms in front of them have much more of a tendency to drop the hands back so that they don’t approach from too steep and angle. With more depth approaching the top I’m hoping John will be able to break his pattern without having to slow it down and think about it so much. The good news here is that after trying this suggestion John reported in that his hand path changed for the better almost immediately, the results of which we will post when we do his next lesson.
