Online Students: John Lamendola Part 11 Hitting Draws and Fades

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Wayne D! Here are a few mid-summer swings. I know I still could use more width as well as more wrist set. Also think I can do a better job of getting left hip out of the way sooner. Let me know what you think and if I wanted you to focus I’d love for you to look at the face on hybrid. It’s still flippy and something looks strange post impact. Not sure if my head isn’t staying back long enough or I am not enough rotary. Have noticed this on my 3-4 iron, hybrid and fairway woods. Let me know what you think. Thanks!!!

As you watch the video you’ll see that I disagree with John’s guesses as to why the hybrid impact looks a bit flippy. His head stays in its box through the impact area nicely, and he is certainly plenty rotary as his left knee disappears from view just as his left arm gets to parallel to the ground in the forward swing. What I do note here is that he is not using his glute muscles to contract and drive his pelvis forward and left through the impact area. We can see evidence of this when he gets to his furthest left point with his hips as his left arm gets to 45 degrees down in the forward swing but back up as he gets to the follow through and finish. As I have discussed many times the big muscles in the butt must contract with the right side squeezing up and left and the left side contracting by pushing up off the ground under the left foot and straightening the left knee. The belt buckle should wind up right against the furthest left point, as I point out in the face on view of Adam Scott. One way to see progress in this area will be to focus on the feet, which are responding to the pelvic and leg movement. John’s right foot stays somewhat stagnant and spins backward on the ball of the foot after the ball is struck, while the left foot spins on its heel, indicating that the hips do not have enough forward, up and leftward drive that would be achieved by firing both glutes.

The video also gives us a nice primer on hitting draws and fades and what the swings should look like when the camera angle stays the same for both shots.
