John is the father of one of website member Mark Smith’s good friends, and Mark was nice enough to purchase an online lesson for him. John plays to an 11 handicap now at age 70, but was a 7 a few years back before undergoing serious back surgery. Some of what we see here is certainly the result of the balky back, but there are things we can do to improve the movement and give John a chance to get back some of the strokes he has lost. I focus here on 3 main items; the handle dragging takeaway that exaggeratedly shuts the face, the hip slide out of the face on box to the right in the backswing, and the lack of lateral movement to shift the weight from right to left in the forward swing. I believe that if John starts his swing more with his upper trunk, arms, and hands working together while rotating the face open with his left wrist and forearm that he will free up his right arm and allow it to fold more effectively and not lift so much. This will also help with the thought of keeping his right hip moving backwards instead of sideways, which will help him to coil his body instead of lifting it. Then in the downswing he should be able to add some slide to his lower body rotation and thus create much more efficient pivot motion which in turn should add a significant amount of speed to his arm swing.
