Hi Wayne,
My youngest son Grant wants to play better golf. He’s a strong kid. I haven’t tried to change his golf swing i.e. maybe shorten it up.
Can you send back your thoughts on how to improve driver swing?
This is a pretty cool lesson, as Grant is all raw potential. This would be the kind of hands on lesson that, if they had a chance to watch, would really help a young professional with designs to be a good teacher someday, because it’s the start of taking something totally untamed and untrained and giving it control and structure without taking away the athleticism. It would be much better for me to be face to face with Grant, but he is out on the west coast so this will have to do. His father Mike has a nice working knowledge of the swing and his brother, Tommy, (you can watch his online lesson videos here on the site) is an excellent player at Rice University, so Grant will definitely have some help. If I were moving Grant around I would first show him how the arms hang and bend at address, and then how the upper trunk turns more perpendicular to the spine as the right arm stays spaced away from the right side and bends a bit more as the turn moves it back. Then I would address the legs, probably with the thought of trying not to move them at all other than having the upper trunk turn move the right hip backwards while keeping the knee flexed and the weight pinned inside the right foot. If this were an all-day affair we might get to the concept of deep hips (in the box) in the forward swing as well.
