I think it would be interesting to go back to watch Derek’s other online lessons either before or after this one to see the progression in the first three and then the bit of regression here in the fourth. Derek reported in that he had been playing and scoring quite well a few months prior to shooting these swings but after getting busy with work and life and not having time to practice or play much had run into a poor stretch of play. In analyzing the swing we see Derek’s usual fluid move and stable lower body from face on, but note some asymmetrical leg movement from down the line, with the right knee and leg holding so stationary that the movement edges well more out into the left hip and knee. Derek’s right arm looks for more depth after left arm parallel, and instead of pointing the shaft on plane he pulls his right arm up and behind him and crosses the line somewhat. The downswing shows the classic pattern of hands dropping, right arm jamming in, hands coming in high, the legs driving to the right and out of the box, and the head pulling away from its starting position. The result is a difficult to control squaring of the club face, especially with the driver, a bigger swing that exaggerates all of the aspects of the pattern. My suggestions are pretty standard, and a player of Derek’s caliber should not be surprised to be working on the same things when the swing goes a touch off. So, it is more depth with the right leg and hip pushing more weight toward the heel (which will serve to load Derek more into the ground), twisting and stopping the right arm and elbow after left arm parallel, which will point the shaft more on plane as opposed to across the line and allow Derek to flatten the shaft earlier and easier in the downswing and spend more energy on getting the hands to approach less high and closer to the shaft plane. Derek has worked on these items before, so I would expect him to be able to incorporate the changes in fairly short order.
Hi Wayne,
Thanks for analyzing my swing, it was very informative and helpful.
I played the last two weeks and shot 76-80 (tough courses) I was very happy with my play the courses I played were both over 7500 yards and in very wet/cold conditions. The Swing is coming along very nicely, My practice sessions have been very productive and my shots are getting a lot tighter in shot dispersion, just gonna keep being patient with it and work hard.. I have set my goal at the end of the year to try and qualify on the Asian tour, I have always wanted to play as a tour pro since I was young and even thou I am a little old, I still have a burning desire to give it a try!! ( I know it is really tough and hard ) but I still want to give it a go!!
Well Wayne, thanks for the advice it has helped my game immensely, really appreciate the work you do with the website and watching your video’s are really enjoyable and educational..
will keep you updated
Cheers
Derek
