Online Students: Derek Cribb Part 3

Derek has made some significant changes in his swing as evidenced by the side by side I use to begin the video. Derek’s first batch of swings showed very nice movement and sequence, and he has the gift of lag and a forward leaning shaft, which means the improvements he can make will be more mechanical in the sense of his placement and direction of the arms, hands and shaft. My suggestion was to eliminate the “pinched” right arm, first by relaxing the arms at address, then by allowing the right arm to bend and get deeper in the early part of the backswing. You can see here that he has done a great job making that change, and has gotten his pivot participating much more fully in the swing, which has caused the shaft to “unstick” itself in the downswing.

In this set of swings I focus again on Derek’s takeaway, and I encourage him to use more early trunk rotation and a firmer connection between the left arm and the chest as the backswing gets underway to keep the hands from popping out and making the initial backswing progression too much out in front of his body, which leads to the hands wanting to drop down in transition instead of moving out toward the ball. The poster child for backswings is Anthony Kim, and it is easy to see the difference when Kim keeps his left arm in against his chest going back as opposed to Derek, who lets his arm move a bit outward. Derek has an excellent swing and has made great progress, so what I am suggesting here is more of a micro change than the initial macro one he has already made, but is nevertheless important to keep the swing improving.
