Hi Wayne,

“First, I’ve really enjoyed your videos, particularly on lowering in the downswing — great stuff. As you’ll see, I’ve been fighting a slight over-the-top move, along with being shut and across the line at the top and sliding forward in the downswing. The last few years, I’ve been working mostly on properly starting the downswing with the lower body, but haven’t been able to consistently keep the club on plane. I greatly appreciate your help”. From Colby’s email you can tell that he has been focusing most of his energy on his downswing. In the video I spend much more time on Colby’s backswing, as I believe that the pattern that emerges from the takeaway leads to a top of the swing and a transition move that will be difficult to change unless the club is moving differently as it approaches the top. So here we work on relaxing the arms at address, starting the swing with the entire upper trunk instead of lifting the club with the hands, and creating width approaching the top. At this point the goal is to get the hands more out away from the head in a wider position, then “catching” that position and starting forward with the lower body before the hands have a chance to keep moving behind the head. This should help remedy both the “cross the line” look at the top and the over the top move starting down, and eventually lead to a later release and better impact.
