Hi Wayne:
I played off +4 as an amateur and then turned pro and played on the pay for play tours about 10 years ago in my early 20s, I have always really liked Ben Hogan’s move and over the years I’ve worked on changing my swing to have similar characteristics. In my golf swing I don’t like how my head moves away from the ball on the backswing and downswing, and have always not liked seeing the club flip over after impacted.
How cool is it to be giving a lesson to a good player from Australia when I’ve never been close to Australia in my life? Very cool. And this is a very cool swing to look at because it does so many good things. You could pretty much tell that it was Hogan influenced even without Byron’s comments, so when I compare it to Hogan’s swing a couple of major differences emerge, and when he makes the changes I think it will improve his ball striking dramatically and fairly quickly. Now, it appears that Byron is quite tall while of course Hogan was perhaps 5’8”, but I’ve never bought into the idea that being tall or short (or fat or skinny) should dictate how you swing. I always thought that Nick Faldo, who is a huge guy at 6’4” 225lbs, looked like a regular sized guy from a distance and that his swing would look great on any body type. In any case, here I focus on two major factors, one being Byron’s distance from the ball in his address, and the second on his lack of right loading in the backswing. The combination of being way too close to the ball and then keeping his weight left from the start really jam him up at impact, causing him to back up to gain some space and to flip his release due to his inability to rotate while backing away.
