Here we see a nice swing to the eye that has some issues that only show up with slow motion analysis. Brendan sets up well to the ball and utilizes a fluid motion that appears to follow the plane lines well and would seem to produce a strong impact position. Closer analysis, however, reveals a weaker than desired impact and upon examining the pattern of the swing once it is initiated, issues with the takeaway and transition that cause the impact alignments to be compromised.
By using the slow motion video analysis with the standard Wayne D. lines we can see that the takeaway is started with a rocking forward of the knees and a sitting back movement of the hips, which leads in turn to a backing up motion in the upper body, and we see clearly that the result is that the head lifts and the shoulders turn back on a flatter than desired plane. These are subtle motions that are not otherwise easily discerned, but as we watch the swing unfold it is apparent that the high and wide approach of the hands into impact is a direct result of what goes on early in the swing.
