First off just want to say I’m a big fan of your videos I’ve been watching them for several years. just to give you some background info about me, I have been trying to play professional golf for the past year. I didn’t play in college, I was a good golfer in high school but always had back problems so I couldn’t practice that much but the back got better and I wanted to give this a shot before it was too late. I’ve been trying to get my hands more ahead at impact all winter long and I haven’t had much success as you can see. I am really trying to get less flippy coming into the ball as I want to be more consistent. I am decent when my timing is on but it’s tough to keep that timing under pressure. My short game really saves me. I’ve tried just about everything to get my hands less flippy through impact from bowing my wrist in the back swing to not sliding my hips at all in the downswing to being shallower in the start of the downswing and almost none of it has worked. the only thing that has somewhat looked good on video is trying to start my downswing while keeping my back to the target but there’s no power in there and I don’t hit it well at all. I’ve been getting lessons from a leadbetter disciple and she has been trying to separate the downswing in two different parts but it’s just happens too fast to think about that and it’s very frustrating. I am contacting you because I want to get a second opinion about it and value what you have to say a lot. I think it has to do with my first move down but would love to hear what you have to say.
Ben has an excellent swing that appears to have everything in order, except that he can’t seem to figure out why he can’t get his hands more forward heading into impact and feels like he is not compressing the ball the way he would like to. It would be a normal reaction to this feeling to try to drive the right elbow further and further forward so that the hands would be driven in front of the ball and the shaft would lean more forward as well. However, as you will see in the video, by overdriving the elbow with the arm remaining well bent the elbow over-leads the hands and the right forearm is angled well to the right when the shaft is at P6 (click here for swing positions explanation video). This is a tricky problem, because changing it requires straightening the right arm enough so that the forearm is pointing more downward at P6 instead of back. Hogan described the general nature of the swing as a “combination underhand and sidearm” throwing motion. Ben needs to focus on feeling that he is delivering the hands to the ball from a lower position with the left arm more vertical at P6 and the right forearm more vertical as well, all while keeping the clubhead up in the air and the angle of the shaft to the left forearm intact. Releasing the bend in the right arm while maintaining clubhead lag is one of the conundrums of the game, but with understanding and practice it can be accomplished.
