Online Students: Anthony Johnson

Anthony reports that he is a 10 handicap who plays worse than that on tough courses or in tough conditions, and in looking at his swing I would agree with him that he has the ability to be a low single digit handicap player if not better. The problem is something I am seeing more and more in physically strong players who combine right arm movement problems with sequence issues and wind up with erratic contact and problems controlling distance and direction. As always, if you watch the first part of the video without sound you should try to make your own observations as to what I might say about Anthony’s swing. If you are reading this and have not done that I would stop here and give it a try. Doing so will surely help your own self -diagnosis in the long run, and it’s fun to test yourself to see if you are close to what I will say (not that I am any sort of genius, but I’m pretty good at discerning what is going on in a golf swing).

I note two big items here: the failure of the right leg to push off from the ground and move the lower body laterally to begin the forward swing, and the corresponding downward and backward movement of the hands in transition, which traps the right arm behind the right side heading into the impact area. We are left with the arms narrowing early in the downswing, a high approach and a right arm that straightens out to the right just past impact. All this puts pressure on the hands to square the face from a complicated set of conditions, not conducive to consistent contact or directional control. Anthony is obviously capable of moving the club at high speed, and if he can improve his sequence and right arm action I think he will start hitting the ball better almost immediately.
