Online Lesson: Thomas Petric- Improving Sequence by Controlling the Right Arm and Shoulder at the End of the Backswing

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Thomas has a nice move that could be improved rapidly by keeping the right arm and shoulder from overturning at the top of the swing. As you will see in the video Thomas does a nice job until the club reaches about ¾ of the way back, at which point he continues to crank the right shoulder and arm back until the club crosses the line and both arms are lifted. The pullback of the right shoulder creates a sequence problem when it pushes the upper body forward into the forward swing before the pelvis has a chance to lead the movement. With the arms moving up and behind the body while the lower body tries to start down the right arm is stuck up there and unable to drive down and forward, leaving it overly bent and not allowing the left arm to stay across the chest in the forward swing. Thomas’ hands and arms move well away from his body by P5, and at the same time his head drifts slightly ahead of the ball, leading to a classic “lean and throw” pattern where the hands feel a need to release the club as the upper body threatens to get too far forward to allow for a late release. I use Xander Schauffle as a side by side example of a full turn with a wider, shorter, more controlled position at the top that lets him “catch” the backswing with great lower body sequence work. Thomas could be doing the same thing if he learns to use Extensor Action along with wrist cock to keep his right arm more in front of him and in better position to head into the downswing. To work on this, I would advise using stop and go drills both from P3 and from P4 to get the feel of ending the backswing with the hands and arms still trying to move out away from the head.
