Online Lesson: Tanner Wieringa- Eliminating Upper Body Lean in Transition Should Produce Great Results

Hi Wayne, my name is Tanner Wieringa (wear-inga), Im 20 years old and have been playing the game for 2.5 years. I am around a 10 hcp and I struggle with my irons. I would like to be able to compress my irons better and be able to control the club face as my shot dispersion is not consistent. Thank you and I look forward to the lesson!

Tanner has done a great job with his swing in only 2 ½ years and judging from the videos I would bet that one major fix will have a huge impact on his ball striking. Tanner has a solid setup, nice motion, and good plane lines. His swing from down the line is particularly good, with the one exception of his right leg firing too much toward the ball and not enough inward to the left. When we look at the swing from face on, however, we see an egregious error when the upper body moves well to the left before the hips have a chance to lead. In other words, a major sequence issue. It is difficult to maintain or increase pelvic tilt and hip depth when the upper body starts the downswing, and it is also hard not to have the arms get pushed out away from the body into a steep, jammed up approach. The noticeable part of the problem is the head, which moves well forward of its original position from P4 to P5, to the point where with the iron he is fully ahead of the ball by P6, which of course will greatly affect how he releases the club. When he learns to stay behind the ball in transition and create the pressure change from right to left from the ground he will be able to get his hands more forward and create much better ball compression at impact, while with the driver he will be able to change his angle of attack to one more upward and better suited for optimum power and trajectory.
