Online Lesson: Rob Palazuelos- Working on the Backswing, Hand Path, and Overall Swing Pattern

“Hi Wayne. I’m a big fan of your videos, and I’ve been working on my
swing by myself for years now. I play semi-pro in Japan, and even joined
long-drive competitions last year. I’m looking to check my head
lowering, and I’d love to get the hands to start towards the ball a bit
better. I think it has to do with more body rotation 45 degrees back.”

It’s probably unfair to put anyone side by side with Tommy Fleetwood but in this case it’s quite educational. Rob triggers his swing by pushing down on the grip and immediately lowering his head, a move that reduces his forearm rotation and shuts the face. From there Rob’s right arm gets jammed at the top, even though he does rotate the arms and hands enough for the club to stay on plane with the iron, although not so with the driver. In transition Rob’s hand path is downward and behind him, and we would both like to see it more toward the ball. As he tries to drive his right elbow in front of him in the forward swing Rob’s right forearm stays well back, giving him an overly wide approach and a throw type release. This works much better with the driver due to the need for that wider approach, although I still don’t think it’s optimum. I would like to see Rob maintain height from P1 to P2 while getting the hands to head more up and away from his body with his forearms adding rotation to get the clubface more toward toe up. This will help his right arm stay in front of him in a more “ready” position so that in transition he can allow the trunk rotation to pull his left arm into the forward swing, which in turn should cause his hands to move more outward and down instead of down behind him. Hopefully from there he won’t feel the need to overdrive the right elbow and he can get his hands more forward at P6.
