Online Lesson Phil Pfeiffer: Working on Right Arm Movement in the Backswing

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

Looking back at Phil’s second lesson I wrote “Keep the nice takeaway but flare the right arm so it’s not pinched anymore” and in this lesson we see that his right arm is still causing problems. There are so many moving parts in the golf swing that it’s easy to forget about one detail because the player is focused on another one, or two, or even three. On top of that you also need to prevail over the neural pathways you’ve developed over time. Challenging but not impossible and Phil has proven he’s up for the challenge.

In the backswing a pinched right arm or right arm in front (externally rotated) technique can work great for players that have the mobility to execute it, but for others, like Phil, it often causes the problem of the left arm rolling upwards and a late flaring of the right elbow. These two things making it difficult, if not impossible, for the left arm to squeeze down in the forward swing, instead pushing it outwards causing a high approach and impact position with an overly left, or out-to-in, path. A high impact position makes it challenging to consistently achieve quality strike and direction, the overly left path causing a cut or pull and at worst a glancing blow or even a pull-hook. So, in this lesson, one of the main areas I focus on is for Phil to begin flaring his right elbow starting at about P1.5 in the backswing.
