Online Lesson: Peter Allen- Working on Swing Shape and Hip Depth

By Wayne | Videos: Online Students

A little background is that I´m addicted to tinkering, but my progress seems to have stalled out.  The good news is that because I have tried so many swings (from Gankas to Malaska), I´m capable of making grip changes, changing my swing plane, etc. and I can still get around the course.

It doesn’t really matter whose “swing” you try if you don’t diagnose your present swing and decide what it is that you need to work on to get better. Peter’s major issue is that he pulls his arms deep across him in the backswing with the club getting well behind him while his pelvis twists moves more forward into his left side than deep into the right. All this sets up a downswing where the left leg can’t get out of the way fast enough and the right side is left behind, a scenario that almost guarantees an in -to -out path and a flip release. I would like to see Peter square up his right foot and open his stance, then work on taking the club back more on plane, which means a feeling of taking the hands more away from the body at the start of the swing and having the hands more in front of the chest at P3. From there I want Peter to think about hitting a fade, anything to promote a less under and to the right pivot movement. It’s impossible to forward lean the club and compress the ball when the hips are square at impact, which means you have to figure out how to get your hips deeper and more open as you strike the ball.
