Online Lesson: Patrick Cunningham- Good Swing Needs Shape Change

Message to Wayne  Hello Wayne. I’ve been watching your stuff for a long time. I know I stand up on the backswing and pull my head off the ball and push my hips toward the ball at impact. I would like to do the “magic move” but have a hard time to feel it. I know I could really improve my iron strikes. I hit the longer clubs, especially the driver, well – of course.

It’s no surprise that Patrick hits his fairway woods and driver better than his irons: his in to out path is much more conducive to a sweeping type release, which of course works better when the ball is on a tee and the club needs to be approaching from a less descending angle. Patrick could achieve instant results with one major change- if he were to get the club to swing back on plane to P2 and keep it on plane better from P2 to P4 the entire shape of his swing would change and his lower body would be much easier to train to stay deep and in the dtl hip box. A “straighter back” takeaway along with less twist in the hips would keep his arms more in front of him and eliminate the need to flatten the shaft late in the downswing. Patrick’s release is wide and coming from the inside, a “double shallow” approach that is not going to lead to much forward shaft lean at impact, and thus not much compression on his iron shots. Using a shaft to keep the club outside of his hands in the takeaway, and another shaft between his feet to keep his right leg from pushing out into the forward swing would be a great station for Patrick to practice with.
