Online Lesson: Nicholas Gobel

Comment to Wayne: Sometimes I hit the ball with a low-ball flight. It feels if my hands have come to far inside after the follow though. Would please explain the best swing path and how close to being on plane is my swing. Thanks

The thing that jumped out at me after watching Nicholas’ swings was his grip and his release. The grip seemed overly loose (especially the right hand), and Nicholas could make a nice overall improvement simply by keeping the connection between the right thumb and forefinger and by focusing on the point at which the right palm holds the left thumb down onto the grip. The release action seen here is possibly the biggest factor as Nicholas’ left wrist maintains extension (cupping, or bending back) all the way past impact, which means that the right hand and arm are forced to square the club and forward leaning the shaft at impact becomes impossible. You can see how broken down the left wrist looks at impact and how the right wrist straightens with a scooping action and it is obvious that it’s going to be hard to compress the ball with those impact alignments. Nicholas is maintaining left forearm pronation far too long and needs to begin to supinate the left forearm and add flexion to the left wrist almost as soon as he feels the change of direction pull his left arm against his chest in transition.
